Artist Profile
Painting brings me delight. My interest in art began at a young age with encouragement from parents and teachers. By my late teens and twenties, the artist-in-me flourished. After graduating high school in a visual and performing arts program I studied music (classical guitar) at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and was tutored by Victoria artist Glen Hawkins. His influence birthed my interest in realism.
In the mid to late 70’s I sold oil paintings to people in and around Duncan. However, marriage, family, further education, and career took me away from painting but for a few brief sojourns back to the easel. Meanwhile,
I completed a Bachelor of Music (U.Vic. 90), a Diploma of Christian Studies, a Master of Divinity (Regent College 93), and ultimately a Doctor of Ministry (Carey Theological College 2014). Moving to Victoria (1994-2004) I first served a church and campus ministry for four years then only the campus ministry for six years. During this time I experimented briefly with impressionistic ideas but returned to realism. Following this decade we moved to Winnipeg where I served a church for six years and then worked with a mission to international students on the city’s campuses for almost seven years. Throughout these years I traveled and taught two-week undergraduate and graduate-level practical theological modules in Ukraine, Armenia, and the Netherlands. Subjects included courses on missions, leadership, cross-cultural evangelism, and church planting.
Now retired, I have returned with the intent to do acrylic painting and take great pleasure in painting landscapes, old buildings, historical scenes and villages enjoying colour and design. I
continue to develop my style and medium, rhythm and design, and fresh thinking about the creative process. Canada’s Group of Seven as well as artists like Robert Genn, and E.J. Hughes inspire me.
There is something deeply satisfying in losing myself in a new work that develops on a canvas through colours and brushes. My work can be viewed at various shows throughout the south and central Vancouver Island area including ongoing displays at Artisans’ Studio in Nanaimo, The Old School House Gallery in Qualicum, and the Rainforest Gallery in Chemainus. Art Cards can be found at the Chemainus Theatre gift shop, Rainforest Gallery in Chemainus, Artisan’s Studio in Nanaimo, Quido’s Cafe in Port Hardy, and The Pearl Ellis Gallery in Comox. Updated lists of shows are posted on my web page jackduckworthartist.ca or you can contact me personally.
Finally, I have done and anticipate opportunities do continue to do short, 1/2, or full day workshops for beginning artists who want to enage the delight of painting for enjoyment.
